Made in Italy, Read Properly

Four words on a neck label do more selling than any campaign, and almost nobody asks what they actually certify. Made in Italy is an origin marking. It is not a quality mark, not a licence, and not a promise about the yarn.

Origin marking across the European Union turns on where a product last underwent substantial transformation. In practice that means the phase that gave the garment its character has to have happened here. Cutting and making a jacket in Naples counts. Pressing and boxing a finished jacket in Naples does not.

What the label does not tell you is the earlier half of the story. A wool coat can be legitimately Italian while its yarn was spun elsewhere and its cloth woven elsewhere again. That is not a scandal, it is how a global supply chain works, and much of it is excellent. But it does mean the label answers one question out of three.

So ask the three separately. Where was the fabric woven? Where was the garment cut and sewn? Where was it finished and pressed? A supplier who works with real Italian production will answer all three in a sentence, because they know the answers. One who hesitates is telling you something.

Then ask for it in writing. A supplier's declaration of origin is an ordinary document in this trade, not a favour. If you ever move the goods across a customs border, that piece of paper is what lets a preferential rate apply, and its absence is what turns a good price into an average one at the frontier.

Be careful with the adjacent phrases too. Italian design, Styled in Italy and Italian fabric are marketing lines, not origin markings. They may be perfectly true. They are simply describing something else, and a buyer who reads them as the same claim will pay the same money for a different thing.

None of this is a reason for suspicion. It is a reason for precision. The houses that genuinely make here are proud of the detail and will give it to you gladly, and the ones who cannot are the reason the question exists.
