Selling to Order: Dropship, Reship, or Buy the Carton

A growing number of shops sell before they buy. They list, they wait for the order, and only then do they source it. It is a serious model — inventory risk is the thing that kills small retailers, and this removes almost all of it — but it does not fit the shape of traditional wholesale, and pretending otherwise wastes everyone's time.

Wholesale is built on the carton. Minimum order quantities exist because the supplier's costs are per shipment, not per piece: picking, packing, customs paperwork and a courier collection cost roughly the same whether the box holds one shirt or eighty. An MOQ is that fixed cost divided by a number that makes the trade worth doing. It is not a barrier for its own sake, and no supplier removes it because a buyer asks nicely — they remove it by changing how the order is fulfilled.

Which gives three honest routes.

Buy the carton. You take the MOQ, hold the stock, and sell from your own shelf. You carry the risk and you keep the full margin. Nothing beats it once you know a line sells.

Reship. You order individual pieces or small runs to your own address and forward them to your customers. The supplier ships one parcel to one trade address, so their costs stay wholesale-shaped and yours stay per-order. You add a leg of shipping and a day or two, and you keep control of packaging and returns. For a market a supplier does not deliver to, this is usually the only route that works at all.

Dropship. The supplier ships directly to your customer, one piece at a time, with no minimum. It is the cleanest version of selling-to-order — and it is also the most constrained, because it only exists where the supplier has actually built it: specific products, specific destinations, a live stock feed and an order interface.

That last constraint is where most conversations end badly. A supplier who says yes to dropshipping everywhere, on everything, has usually not thought about who pays for a failed delivery in a country their courier contract does not cover.

The practical advice is unglamorous: ask which route a supplier genuinely supports before you ask for prices, and ask which destinations. A clear no on dropshipping plus a working reship arrangement will make you more money this season than an enthusiastic yes that quietly turns into a three-week delay on your first customer order.
