Why the Photographs Are Behind the Login

First-time visitors meet a wall of dark tiles bearing brand wordmarks where they expected garment photographs, and a reasonable number of them conclude the site is broken. It is not. It is locked, which is a different thing — and a lock nobody explains is indistinguishable from a fault.

Product photography on a wholesale catalogue is not decoration. It is the most copied asset in the business. A packshot lifted from a trade catalogue reappears within days on a marketplace listing offering the same garment at a price nobody could actually supply it for, and the first person to be harmed is the retailer who bought the real stock and is now being undercut by a listing with no goods behind it. The photograph is what makes that listing look credible. Withholding it from anonymous visitors removes the cheapest ingredient in the con.

There is a quieter reason too. A catalogue with open photographs and closed prices is an invitation to browse, and browsing is not what this is for. The people who benefit from a trade catalogue are traders, and the fastest way to fill a sourcing board with noise is to make it entertaining to people who will never buy.

None of which is any comfort if you have just landed on a page of grey rectangles. So the tiles say what they are: a brand wordmark rather than a blank, and a line telling you the photograph is withheld rather than missing. It is a small thing, but the difference between "locked" and "broken" is the difference between registering and leaving.

What opens it is simply an account. Photographs unlock for members; trade pricing unlocks when a trade document is on file; seller identity and bulk exports unlock on approval. Three gates, three different keys, and each one opens as soon as the thing it asks for arrives.

The editorial photography on these pages works differently and deliberately so. It is openly licensed work, credited to the photographer wherever it appears, precisely because it is not product photography and has nothing to protect. Journal pictures are meant to be seen by everyone. Catalogue pictures are meant to be seen by people who might buy the garment.
