The Milan Calendar: When Italian Stock Actually Moves

Italian wholesale runs on a calendar that almost nobody writes down, and a buyer who does not know it spends the year arriving at the wrong moment.

The visible part is the shows. Milan runs its women's weeks in late February and again in September, and its men's weeks in January and June. What matters to a wholesale buyer is not the runway but the showrooms that open around it, because that is when the season's order book is genuinely open and the terms are at their most flexible.

The order deadlines sit a few weeks behind the showroom. Spring and summer is written roughly from January to March, autumn and winter from July to September. Miss the window and you are not locked out, but you are buying from what remains rather than from what was planned, which is a different negotiation.

Delivery follows a long way back. Goods ordered in the winter window generally land from late spring; the autumn book lands from late summer. The gap between writing an order and paying for stock is the part that catches new buyers, and it is why the calendar is a cash-flow document as much as a buying one.

Then comes the interesting part for anyone not buying the main book. Stock loosens twice a year, in the weeks after the sales and again once a delivery window closes and the goods are physically in a warehouse rather than a plan. That is when available quantities appear, when carton prices soften, and when a smaller buyer can get at labels that were closed in season.

August is a real thing. Much of Italian production and a good number of showrooms stop for two or three weeks around Ferragosto. Nothing ships, nothing gets sampled and nobody answers. Plan around it rather than discovering it.

The practical version is short. Ask the season, not the price. A seller who tells you which window a piece came from is also telling you how the price will move over the next eight weeks.
