Why Escrow Is Quietly Reshaping B2B Fashion

For decades, wholesale fashion ran on trust and terms. You knew your supplier, you paid on account, and a bad parcel was a phone call and an awkward negotiation. That model works — until you are buying from someone you have never met, in another country, for the first time.

That is the reality of the modern branded-stock market. The best deals increasingly come from sellers you find online, not the ones you have worked with for ten years. And the moment the relationship is new, the old trust-based settlement becomes the weakest link.

It is worth being precise about what actually goes wrong, because "getting burned" covers three quite different failures and only one of them is fraud. The first is the parcel that never ships. The second is the parcel that ships but is not what was described — a different size make-up, a lower grade, forty pieces short. The third is the seller who is entirely honest but runs out of road between your payment and your delivery, at which point your money is an unsecured claim against a company in administration.

A bank transfer answers none of the three. Once a SEPA payment settles, it is gone: no chargeback, no dispute window, no intermediary with any interest in getting it back. That surprises buyers who are used to card payments in their own retail business. The protection you take for granted as a consumer does not exist in the payment method most of wholesale still runs on.

Escrow closes that gap. Instead of wiring money to a stranger and hoping, the buyer pays into a protected account. The seller ships, the buyer confirms the goods are as described, and only then are the funds released. If something is wrong, the money is still recoverable.

What makes it work in practice is that the seller can see the money. A seller who knows the funds are already committed ships without hesitating, and that dissolves the standoff that kills most first orders between strangers — the buyer who will not pay before shipping, the seller who will not ship before payment. Escrow is usually described as buyer protection. It is just as accurately described as the thing that lets a cautious seller say yes.

If you are assessing any escrow arrangement, three questions matter more than the marketing around it. How long is the inspection window, and does it start on delivery or on dispatch? What counts as "not as described" — is a short count treated the same as a quality complaint? And who decides when the two sides disagree? An arrangement that cannot answer the third question is not escrow; it is a holding account with good intentions.

Be equally clear about what escrow does not do. It does not verify quality — it holds money while you verify quality, which is a different thing and puts the work back on you. It does not make a bad buy good: stock you did not want at a price you should not have paid is still a mistake, protected or not. And it is not a substitute for opening the carton. The inspection window is only worth something to a buyer who actually inspects inside it, and the most common way a protected order goes wrong is a buyer who signs, stacks the boxes and looks properly three weeks later.

The effect on the market is subtle but real. Escrow lets a small retailer buy confidently from a seller three countries away. It lets a new seller win orders they would never land on reputation alone. It compresses the trust-building period from months into a single transaction, which is why the sellers who adopt it first tend to be the ones growing fastest.

On VESTRA, escrow is not an add-on — it is the default. Card payment is held, sellers are verified before they trade, and release is tied to delivery. None of that removes your judgement from the process; it just means a first order with an unknown seller costs you a careful inspection rather than a leap of faith.
