Why Wholesale Prices Sit Behind a Trade Licence

Every buyer meets the same wall eventually. You find the product, you want the number, and the number asks who you are first. It is a reasonable moment to be annoyed, so it is worth explaining what the wall is actually doing.

A wholesale price is not a retail price with a discount attached. It is the price at which a supplier sells to someone who will sell it again — someone carrying their own shop, their own customers and their own tax registration. Published openly, that price stops being a trade price and becomes a public undercut of every retailer already selling the same goods, including the ones buying here. Protecting it is not secrecy for its own sake; it is the condition that makes the price available at all.

There is a second reason, and it matters more. A marketplace that takes anyone's word for being a business ends up with sellers who are not businesses either. The document you upload is the same one your own suppliers ask for — a Gewerbeschein in Germany, an extrait Kbis in France, a visura camerale in Italy, a certificate of incorporation or business registration elsewhere. It is not a credit check and it is not an interrogation. It is the ordinary paperwork of being a trader, and asking for it in both directions is what keeps the other side of the market honest too.

The part worth knowing is the timing. Prices open when the document is uploaded, not when it is approved. Approval is done by a person and can take days; the upload is your own action and it takes a minute. Tying the catalogue to approval would mean a real buyer who has done everything asked of them sits looking at locked prices while a queue moves — and the reason they registered in the first place was to see the prices.

So the two are deliberately separated. Uploading opens trade pricing. Approval, when it comes, opens the rest: seller identity, bulk exports, the full line sheet.

Nothing about this is designed to slow you down. If your paperwork is in a drawer, this is a five-minute step and the catalogue opens the moment it lands. If you are not a trader, the wall is doing exactly what it should, and no amount of engineering would make it right to show you the number behind it.
