Reading a Tiered Price Break Before You Commit

Almost every listing on VESTRA carries a tier table rather than a single price. The Lacoste L1212 piqué polo is typical: eighty pieces at €34.00, a hundred and sixty at €29.50, three hundred and twenty at €25.00. The gap between the top and bottom rung is nine euros a piece, which on a full pallet is real money.

The temptation is to read that table downward and buy the cheapest line. That is the wrong direction. Read it upward, starting from the quantity you are confident you can sell inside one season, and let the price land where it lands.

The reason is that a price break only pays if the stock turns. Twenty-five euros a piece is an excellent number on a garment you sell out of. On a garment that sits, it is twenty-five euros of capital in a stockroom, and the nine euros you saved never arrives — it is deferred into inventory you have to discount later to release.

There is a simple test. Take the tier you are tempted by, divide it across the weeks you expect to sell it, and ask whether that weekly figure resembles anything you have actually done with a comparable garment. If you sell six polos a week in a colour, three hundred and twenty pieces is a year of trading, not a season.

Where the higher tiers genuinely earn their place is on a garment you already know. If the piqué polo is a repeat line for you, the tier table is not a gamble — it is a volume discount on demand you have already proven. That is the buy worth stretching for.

The other honest use of a tier table is as a planning tool for a group buy. Several buyers reaching a rung together get the unit price none of them could reach alone, without any one of them carrying the whole quantity. That is what the group-buy function on the platform exists to do.

One more thing worth checking is where the tiers sit relative to each other. A table that steps down gently — a euro or two a rung — is telling you the seller has thin margin and little room to move. A table with a steep drop at the top rung is usually a seller trying to clear a specific quantity, and that is the one worth a conversation. Ask what happens just below the rung. Sellers who set a tier at three hundred and twenty will often hold the price at two hundred and eighty if it empties a pallet.

Finally, treat the tier table as one input and not the whole decision. A slightly worse unit price from a seller who ships in four days, answers questions and takes a return without argument is cheaper in practice than the best rung on the board from someone who does none of those things. The unit price is the only number on the page, which is exactly why it gets more weight than it deserves.
